Private Lessons

student drummer

I teach students of all levels ages 8+: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. Every lesson is designed to be a fun and unique experience.

From the very first lesson, my students begin to learn and understand how to coordinate using their hands and feet to create a consistent rythmic pattern.

Each milestone of accomplishment is confirmed with a priceless smile!

My approach to teaching is not dictated exclusively by following page by page from a pre-written music book. Instead, I apply a mix of rudiments (drum patterns) that I first teach on the snare drum (I use “Stick Control” by George Lawrence) and then have the student play these rudiments as a beat or drum fill on all parts of the drum set.

As the student’s confidence grows, more layers are added. This includes a variety of rock beats and more complicated drum fills. Along with this learning progression we also play along to songs that are based on the drum beats we just learned, so there is a direct connection with drum pattern and how it’s used in a real song.

Ear Training

As we listen and play along to each song, we also learn how to play closely to what the drummer on the recording is playing. This is what we refer to as “ear training”. Most drummers are in bands that play cover songs. This ear training method gives my students a tremendous advantage in how to learn new songs quickly to play with their band mates.

Ear protection is always paramount and an important safety measure I always employ with my students. I use dual bluetooth headphones that are used for ear protection when playing without music on the drum set, and for music playback at a comfortable and safe volume for the student.
